I thought I’d write a short tutorial on camera usage for all my aspiring photographer friends. I am by no means a pro, but I know basically how cameras work, and so now you can too!
Cameras work because of one thing - light. Without light, there is no photography. It’s important to get a feel for how much light actually is available. As a general rule there is much more light outdoors than indoors (in the dayllight). Your eyes compensate for this automatically. In fact, our eyes are pretty amazing, and so it’s sometimes hard to judge how much light there actually is. Any situation other than full daylight is pretty much low light as far as your camera is concerned.
When you take a picture, light travels through the lens and onto the film/sensor for a short moment. Pretty much everything about the picture is controlled by how much light reaches the film/sensor and how sensitive the film/sensor is to that light. Understanding how this all works is key to taking good pictures. Luckily it’s actually pretty simple. In the next post, I’ll talk about film/sensor sensitivity.
