1. Dismount Poorly? Get Surgery!

It’s always a bad sign when the hand specialist not only says “Wow!” when examining your hand, but then calls in the medical student and then finally rushes off to excitedly look at the X-rays. Apparently while I am poor at cyclocross dismounts, I’m really great at breaking bones. Specifically, I’ve broken my right thumb’s metacarpal right at the base. You can see it pretty clearly on my previous post. Apparently the large lump on my hand - visible once again because the swelling has gone down a bit - is the broken end of the metacarpal sticking up out of the joint.

As you may have guessed, it’s a bad break, and apparently not something a simple cast can easily fix, so… tomorrow I’m going to have a metal plate put into my thumb to repair the break. With luck, things should be relatively back to normal in a few days other than a slight reduction in extension (no career as a hitchhiker for me).

More updates after the surgery. Wish me luck!
